4 Security Tips To Stay Safe This 4th of July

In between parades and pools, remember that the Fourth of July also takes place in the summer, which statistically speaking, is the prime time for home burglaries. Don’t lose sight of securing your home this holiday weekend. Celebrate America’s birthday safely and securely by following these 4 safety tips.

1. Home Security Safety

Most Fourth of July parties are held in our backyards and outside of homes. Make sure to know who is coming and going by keeping your front door locked. Instruct guests to enter through a designated area. If you are going out of town for the day, make sure to keep your home well lit and armed. For an added layer of protection, consider the following security system equipment:

2. BBQ/Grilling Safety

Summer is the prime season for grilling outdoors. Whether you are grilling hot dogs or steaks, be cautious of burn bans and dry grassy areas. A few other tips include:

Use the grill at least 10 feet away from your home.
Clean your grill by removing any grease or fat build up.
Remove any decorations and keep away from overhanging branches.
Never leave the grill unattended.

3. Lake/Pool Safety

Pool parties or lake parties are always a must when celebrating the 4th of July. Before you make a splash, take proper precautions to keep your family and friends safe.

Make sure life jackets are approved, haven’t expired, and you do not exceed the weight limit.
Once everyone is out of the pool, replace the cover or lock the pool gate to ensure that no one reenters without your knowledge. For an added layer of security, install a motion detector or a wireless sensor that connects to your security system so that you receive an alert if there is movement around the swimming pool area.
Always apply sunscreen generously and appropriately.
Supervise young children. According to the Red Cross, over 200 kids drown each year in backyard pools.

4. Firework Safety

According to the National Fire Protection Association, each July 4th, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks – devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.Before using fireworks, find out if they are legal in your County.

Used fireworks should be soaked with water and placed in a nonflammable trash can outside.
Keep your garage door closed to ensure pets don’t escape or intruders don’t enter while your attention is focused on the firework display.
Do not allow young children to handle fireworks.
Carefully supervise teens if they’re using fireworks.
Do not relight a “dud” firework.
