Unarmed security personnel are often ill-equipped to handle dangerous situation or physical altercation

February 2, 2023/in Physical Security/by Bee-Safe Security

The debate over the use of armed security versus unarmed has been a contentious issue in the United States for many years. While some argue that unarmed security is a safer and more effective solution, the reality is that armed security is a better option for many reasons.

First, unarmed security personnel are often ill-equipped to handle dangerous situations, such as an active shooter incident or a physical altercation. In such scenarios, unarmed security personnel are unable to provide an immediate and effective response, leaving students, faculty, and staff vulnerable to harm.

In contrast, armed security personnel have the training and equipment necessary to respond quickly and effectively to dangerous situations. They are equipped with firearms, which give them the ability to neutralize a threat and protect those in their care. Additionally, armed security personnel have the training necessary to make split-second decisions and take action to protect the safety of those around them. In Ohio, armed officers are required to complete the 20HR OPOTA Private Security Firearms Course. Additional training may be required depending on the operating procedures of each company.

Second, unarmed security personnel are often seen as a deterrent, but in reality, they are often unable to prevent crime from occurring. Criminals and those intent on causing harm are often not deterred by the presence of unarmed security personnel and are more likely to carry out their plans in the presence of unarmed security.

In contrast, the presence of armed security personnel serves as a much stronger deterrent. The knowledge that there is a well-trained and armed security presence on the campus sends a message that crime and violence will not be tolerated. Additionally, armed security personnel are trained to identify and respond to potential threats, helping to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place.

Finally, unarmed security personnel are often not held to the same standards of training and certification as armed security personnel. This can result in a lower level of skill and proficiency, making them less effective in emergency situations.

In conclusion, while some argue that unarmed security is a safer and more effective solution, the reality is that armed security is a better option for many reasons. The presence of armed security personnel provides a faster and more effective response to dangerous situations, serves as a stronger deterrent to crime, and ensures that security personnel have the necessary training and skills to protect the safety of those in their care.
